More than just grass

Grasslands are a lot more than just grass. Think wildflower meadows, ground nesting birds and hundreds of species of small mammals and insects taking shelter from birds of prey (normally, unsuccessfully). There’s a lot going on in the grassland at the Millennium Country Park.

You’ll probably have seen the sheep, cows and Exmoor ponies in our wet grassland next to the Wetlands Nature Reserve – this area is managed by grazing animals to make an ideal habitat for ground nesting birds like lapwing and oyster catchers. We manage mowing of all grassland in the park to avoid disturbance to these birds, during nesting season.

The rough grassland of the Park houses many species of small mammals like field voles and harvest mice and simultaneously acts as a great hunting ground for birds of prey like kestrel and barn owls.

Wildflower meadows not only look amazing but provide a vital habitat for pollinators – we all know how important bees are to the planet, and you’d find many species, including the buff tailed bumblebee, expanding their colonies in holes provided by small mammals.

Considering 97% of the UK’s wildflower meadows have been lost since WWII, and only 1% re-created, we need as many as we can get.

Sponsoring an area of Grassland for a loved one is not only a beautiful gift for any nature lover, but also a step in the right direction to help us maintain this vital habitat not only for the thousands of species which rely on grassland but for the pollinators we desperately rely on as humans to help our crops.

Sponsorship is sent via email, and includes an information sheet about your chosen habitat, and a personalisable certificate.
