Welcome to the Kings Wood & Houghton House Circular Walk

A pleasant three mile walk using public rights of way.

This information was designed and produced by members of the Houghton Conquest Parish Paths Partnership Group in order to help & encourage others to enjoy the local countryside. Together, with all improvement works to the footpath network in the parish, it has been funded entirely through the Parish Paths Partnership Scheme.

HOUGHTON CONQUEST is placed centrally in Bedfordshire and lies at the foot of the Greensand Ridge at the crossing of two ancient roads.

The village takes its name from the coupling of the old English "hoh" and "tun" (meaning a farmstead on or near a ridge or hill-spur) with the name of an important local family in the 13th century - the Conquests.

You may like to include a wander around the Glebe Meadows, Round Close, Kings Wood Close, Cowslip Meadow and Long Meadow (owned and managed by Bedfordshire County Council) or a visit to Houghton House ruins or take an alternative route through Kings Wood - a variety of options are open to you - the choice is yours!
