From Commentree, the Forest of Marston Vale's newsletter, published in June 2006... "The line of the old railway between Oxford and Cambridge passed through the park area. It is now used in part as the National Cycle Network, Route 51." The consortium set up to consider the potential for reopening the line has carried out a number of studies on the route and their view is that the old alignment east of Bedford is the most sensible. It recognises however, that this is not possible in some locations eg. where it has already been built on. No route is formally protected. The Consortium is focusing current efforts on the section west of Bedford where feasibility and design work is underway. Once the Western section is more certain the Consortium will expect to return to looking at the the Central, Bedford-Cambridge Section. For more information please go to www.eastwestrail.org.uk |
